Tilman's sailing narratives maintain and even improve on the irony, humour and stoicism of the mountain books set against a backdrop of even tenser struggles with nature. To some extent Tilman's Mischief in Patagonia (1957) compliments Shipton's Land of Tempest (1963) in their mutual interest in the exploration of the Patagonian Icecaps. Thereafter the links cease - Shipton continued his Patagonian Icecap explorations whereas Tilman, after three more Southern Hemisphere sailing trips concentrated on the Arctic. Ironically both died in 1977, Shipton (69) of natural causes, Tilman (79) disappearing in the South Atlantic on one final sailing venture.
