Contained in this Tilman omnibus are: Snow on the Equator, The Ascent of Nanda Devi, When Men and Mountains Meet, Everest 1938, Two Mountains and a River, China to Chitral and Nepal Himalaya.
The books of Tilman and Shipton complement one another. The climbers frequently went on trips together but refrained from writing rival books about the same venture. Their styles were totally different: Tilman keenly aware of the quirks and idiosyncrasies of those he met and the delicious ironies and humour he observed (though studiously avoiding comment about Shipton); Shipton concentrating far more on the splendours and challenges of the environment and the romance of the activity. Between them they created a rich tapestry of Himalayan and Asian exploration and adventure. The Tilman / Shipton style of travel (following in the footsteps of Longstaff, Kellas and Meade) has come to exemplify an approach to the mountains that is greatly admired and practiced to this day. Their books are thus essential reading for all who are enthralled by the mysteries of the Himalaya.
